Autumn destination: Belgrade, the vibrant capital of Serbia

Belgrade is attracting more and more tourists each year, thanks to low prices and the interesting mix of vivid nightlife, wonderful Balkan cuisine and historical landmarks just waiting to be discovered.

Here are some of the places I have visited during my weekend break in Belgrade, but I do advice you to stay here for more than just the weekend. You won't get bored, I promise.

Belgrade Fortress

Where the Danube and Sava rivers meet rises the impressive Belgrade Fortress, the symbol of Belgrade. The fortress is right in the middle of Kalemegdan Park, an extensive green area loved by townspeople and tourists alike. Visit the fortress and admire an incredible view over New Belgrade and the confluence of the two rivers.

Skadarlija and Cetinjska quarters

The area of Skadarlija and Cetinjska is car-free and is meticulously paved with bumpy cobblestones. Here you will discover how Belgrade nightlife really looks like. If you don't feel like dancing, simply try the tasty local cuisine at one of the many traditional restaurants in these quarters. Do not forget to order some rakija (a local spirit with very high alcohol content), the national drink of Serbia. The bohemian quarter of Skadarlija  is also called "Belgrade Montmartre”, as, early in the 20th century, this has been the gathering place of many actors, writers, musicians and journalists.

Knez Mihailova street

In order to get to Kalemegdan Park, you’ll walk along Knez Mihailova street, the main commercial artery of the city. In the 19th century, the most respectable families of Belgrade erected here mansions and palaces. Nowadays, this is a pedestrian area, with many art galleries, bookstores, cafes and restaurants.

Saint Sava cathedral

This large Orthodox Church is one of the main monuments of Serbia’s capital. This is the spiritual hub of Belgrade, dedicated to Saint Sava, the founder of the Serbian church. The famous Hagia Sophia in Istanbul served as a model for the project of the church, started in 1935.

For accommodation, book a room at Allure Caramel Hotel by Karisma (http://www.allurecaramelhotel.com/). This wonderful boutique hotel has a charming design, with classy room and an impressive reception hall. I really enjoyed spending time here, as it is also pretty close to the central area of Belgrade.
