Escape to Provence. Part I: Roussillon, Menerbes & Bonnieux villages

Roussillon village

Roussillon is considered to be one of the most beautiful French villages, as it offers incredible views over the striking surrounding hills, composed of ochre rocks having different shades. The sight of the ochre quarries opens in front of your eyes as soon as you enter the village and it is truly astonishing.

A visit to Roussillon allows you to discover not only this beautiful village, but also the famous Ochre Path (“Sentier des ocres”), a colorful footpath, with many informative panels for the visitors to find out information about the history of ochre. Leave your car in one of the parking areas close to the entrance to the former quarries and have a nice one hour walk along the Ochre Path.

As per the village, be prepared to admire a charming piece of Provence, with narrow streets, colorful houses painted in 17 shades of ochre, numerous art galleries and pottery shops.

Do not miss the village’s patisserie:  Le temps passé. You’ll feel in love the tasty desserts and pastries they serve here.

In the middle of Roussillon village lies the historical Castrum, from where you’ll admire some of the best views over the Vauclose plateau and Mont Ventoux.

Roussillon village has been the hub we’ve chosen for the holiday in Provence, as it is close to all major attractions in the area. We have booked a wonderful house for our stay: Le Guston en Luberon. This spacious stone house is close to the restaurants in Roussillon, is sparkling clean and very well-equipped with all necessary items. As bonus, Regis, the owner, is a delightful person.

The village is packed with great restaurants, offering traditional French dishes. Among them, these are the restaurants that really got my attention:

Le Piquebaure Restaurant

Le P’tit Gourmand Restaurant

La Grape de Raisin Restaurant

Menerbes village

The village of Menerbes has been made famous by the English writer Peter Mayle, who wrote the well-known novel “A year in Provence", inspired by his stay here. The village had also other famous visitors, such as Pablo Picasso, who stayed here in 1946, or the writer Albert Camus.

This small Provencal village is dominated by the main square, Place de l’Horloge, surrounded by historical buildings and the imposing town hall.

You may also admire the Citadelle, a 13th century fortress -  part of the village’s historic defense system.

Do not forget to pay a visit to the House of Truffles and Wines, placed near the main square, and buy some bottles of wine to make your friends at home happy.

Bonnieux village

On the northern side of Luberon hills you’ll discover the terraced village of Bonnieux, one of the most beautiful places in Provence. The terraces situated below the village’s old church offers incredible views of the surrounding mountains and Calavon valley.

Admire the old church, dating back to the 12th century, that now is not longer used.

Close to Bonnieux village, you may have a quick stop to Pont Julienn, a Roman bridge from AD300.
