Discover Mexico City (Ciudad de Mexico): Part I – Colors and contrasts

Mexico is not a friendly holiday destination. Before leaving Romania, everybody warned me about the danger of visiting Mexico, so I decided to take certain precautionary measures during my stay in order to avoid any problems: I did not wear any jewels, I kept only small amounts of money on me and I took Uber  during the evenings. So, I had no nasty events during my stay in Mexico, but I could surely feel a certain tension while being there. However, I do not regret having visited Mexico. I discovered a spectacular country, full of color and contrasts. These features are even more obvious in the capital Mexico City.

The vibrant capital of Mexico should be on the travel list of every person willing to get in touch with Mexican culture and to find out information about the ancient Aztec and Maya civilizations.

In Mexico City, with more than 23 million inhabitants, you'll find many museums, picturesque neighborhoods, traditional restaurants and happiest locals I've ever encountered. People are simply dancing, singing and laughing on the streets.

The heart of Mexico City is the huge Zocalo square, where you'll find historical remains, the Metropolitan Cathedral and the National Palace, the Government headquarters and the Presidential Palace.

Starting from Zocalo, explore by foot the central area of the city, packed with skyscrapers and modern buildings. Prepare for many hours of walking, as the central area is quite large and filled with touristic attractions. I'll tell you in the following posts more about it.

Pallacio de Bellas Artes, with its classical appearance, appears to be contrast with the surrounding modern buildings. Entirely built in Carrara marble, the palace hosts musical and theatrical events, opera and ballet spectacles and it is often called the Art Cathedral of Mexico City.

If your shoes get dirty (which is highly possible, because of the pollution in the city), you may always stop to clean it, as there are many people just waiting to do this for you against a moderate amount of money.

The luxury in the center has nothing in common with what you'll find in the outskirts of Mexico City. The houses are crowded, there is no room left for any new buildings and people do their best to live in very small and unsanitary spaces.

Street markets may be found at almost every street corner, filled with fruits, vegetable and products that you will probably not see in many other corners of the world.

Street food is very loved by locals and tourists alike. However, the storage conditions are not the best, so I decided to eat only at restaurants with a clean appearance. I have surely missed out on some interesting culinary experiences, but better to be safe than sorry. Mexican cuisine is very tasty and flavored. Chicken, pork and beef meat is highly appreciated, so is the coriander - Mexicans' favorite condiment. Do not forget to try the Mexican traditional dish – tacos, small flat breads filled with minced meat, onion, coriander and many sauces, most of them extremely spicy.

Those who feel brave enough may try los chapulines - small, red, edible insects or Chicharrón - fried pork rinds, both extremely appreciated by the locals.
