Discover Mexico City (Ciudad de Mexico): Part II – Museums

The best way to find out more about Mexican culture is to pay a visit to the museums in Mexico City, especially if the weather is not that great (which is not unusual in this city situated at a 2250 meters altitude).

From more than 130 museums, I highly recommend these four museums rich in historical information about Mexico City and the corresponding geographical region.

The Anthropology Museum

Considered to be the most visited museum in Mexico City, the Anthropology Museum  (http://www.mna.inah.gob.mx/) hosts thousands of Precolumbian civilizations artifacts of great value, including a huge section dedicated to the famous Maya civilization.

The Museum's main artifact is the famous Sun Stone (La Piedra del Sol ), made of basalt and weighting approximately 22 tones. Though, at first sight, the Sun Stone seems to be an ancient Aztec calendar, it is, in fact, an altar used in the past for performing sacrifices.

The Folk Art Museum

The Folk Art Museum brings together many objects portraying the cultural history of Mexico, as well as Mexican people traditions and their many talents.

This Museum, comprising thousands of artifacts divided into many categories, is hosted by a beautiful Art Deco building.

Soumaya Museum

Soumaya Museum (http://soumaya.com.mx/) is owned by the famous business man Carlos Slim. In fact, the name of the Museum has been chosen in loving memory of Soumaya Domit, Carlos Slim's late wife, who has died in 1999. This Museum amazes by its futuristic architecture and modern style.

Placed in the heart of the luxurious Miguel Hidalgo neighborhood, Soumaya Museum hosts a vast collection of paintings and art objects, including paintings of French sculptor August Rodin, of  Monet,  Degas, El Greco, Tintoretto, Lucas Cranach , Zurbarán and Vincent Van Gogh. Enjoy this wonderful place, especially taking into account the fact that it is opened to the public every day  of the year, free of charge.

Wax Museum

Here you'll find over two hundred wax statues, representing famous historical, art, political or sports personalities. So, do not miss it if you reach Juarez neighborhood in Mexico City.
