Romanian tourism: Day trip destinations in Danube Delta - Mila 23 and Letea villages

After previously sharing some information about Sulina, the marvelous town in Danube Delta, this time I’ll write about two lovely villages close to Sulina, chosen by most of the tourists for day trips by boat: Mila 23 and Letea.

Mila 23

You have probably heard of Mila 23 as being the birth place of the famous Romanian sprint canoeist Ivan Patzaichin, winner of four golden medals at the Summer Olympic Games. Also located on the Sulina arm, Mila 23 village has a special charm and is loved by tourists in search of rest and leisure. So, you may either visit it for a few hours or you may choose it a starting point for exploring Danube Delta thoroughly.

Use the time spent in this traditional fishing village to relax, read and try the savory cuisine of the region that I’ve told you about in my previous post about Sulina: https://alltheflavorsandcolors.blogspot.com/2018/10/romanian-tourism-sulina-place-where.html

Do not forget to go on boat rides on the channels for bird watching and admiring the spectacular sceneries.

There are plenty of guest houses to choose from for accommodation in Mila 23. My recommendation  is Casa Alexandru si Alexandra (http://casaalexandrusialexandra.ro/). The hosts are extremely welcoming and the traditional food they serve is very fresh and tasty. Do not forget to book in advance.

Letea village and forest

One of the best destinations for boat trips is Letea village. Letea is one of the main reasons for which Danube Delta (Delta Dunării) has been included on UNESCO’s World Heritage list. This is an incredibly beautiful area, which has preserved its wild aspect.

After passing through Letea village and admiring the traditional houses, head to Letea Forest. This is a natural reservation, as well as the oldest protected area in Romania. What is special about it is the mixing of desert vegetation (sand dunes) with the oak and elms forests.

Also, Letea is famous for its wild horses, running freely on the meadows, for the visitors' delight.

Spend at least a few hours in this wonderful place, which represents the very essence of the Danube Delta. Listen to the locals’ stories, admire the landscapes and enjoy the local gastronomy at one of the many hosts in Letea Village.
